Upson County is enthusiastic about education. Serving over 5,000 students with approximately 325 certified teachers and an additional 300 support staff, Thomaston's school system offers a broad instructional program, meeting the needs of all its students, from the gifted, to college prep and vocational/technical students, and those with special needs. The system operates a comprehensive Pre-K through 12th grade program at five schools; three elementary, one middle school, and one high school. All schools are accredited through the Georgia Accrediting Commission.

Westwood Academy offers small classes and hands-on learning environment. Founded in 1968, Westwood Academy is a private, coeducational school providing quality education for students from three-year-old preschool through fifth grade, and is managed by a highly trained and nurturing staff, who adhere to strict Christian work ethics in all aspects of its education practice.
